BES 6001:3.1 Certification Awarded

The impact of our purchasing decisions has never been more critical.  Our global economy is now bringing to bear the Butterfly effect: when a butterfly flaps it’s wings in one part of the world it can cause a hurricane in another part of the world.  Construction by its nature of increasing or improving density is intensely energy demanding, the embodied energy contained in our building stock has derived from the earth’s resources, therefore, as construction professionals we should all carefully consider the ethics of our purchasing decisions.  The materials used on a building draw from the Global economy, therefore a decision today could create deforestation in poorer regions of the world or create the impetus for modern slavery.

Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems, as a British privately owned organisation has always held its integrity in business as the cornerstone of its operations.  As part of The Parkside Group Limited, Comar has built up excellent, long term relationships with its suppliers, ensuring they are paid on time and if issues arose building partnerships which quickly lead to their resolution.

We require as a minimum that they have an ethical business and hold ISO 14001 certification.  Good supplier management coupled with ethical business practices is the basis of BRE’s BES 6001 standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products.

We are pleased to announce that we are certified through BRE’s new BES 6001:3.01 Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products, receiving a “Good” rating.  This ensures that our architectural and contractor partners can rest assured, that in contracting with Comar and its Nationwide Network of Approved Subcontractors our aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling systems have been sourced responsibly with a company that holds the ethics of good supplier management at its heart.  Not only does BES 6001 audit and accredit supplier management it delves deeper to ensure that all aspects of global citizenship are covered, these are held under three main headings: Organisational Management, Supply Chain Management and Environmental and Social Responsibility Management.  This award is even more noteworthy when we consider that this is the new standard and Comar are the first to receive this in the aluminium sector.  Click to view certification http://blog.comar-alu.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BES-6001-3-1- Responsible-Sourcing-Certificate-2016-2019-Page-1-only.pdf

School ReBuild – Aluminium Windows & Doors to the Rescue

front coverComar Architectural Aluminium Systems, with their approved fabricator Anglia Fixing Ltd; completed an extended rebuild of John Ray Infants School which was burnt  to the ground during a 12 hour fire, days before the pupils returned from summer holidays.  This extended new build project has enabled the school to increase its intake from 285 to 360 pupils providing much needed extra school places in the local community.

This project was completed using Comar 5P.i ECO Top Hung  Windows.  The aluminium P.i & P.i ECO window and door systems use trademarked Polyamide Insulated (P.i) that provides exceptional thermal performance and reduces heat loss through the thermal break ensuring low U-values and therefore ensuring energy bills are minimised.

Comar 7P.i Commercial Doors are a natural choice in a busy school environment and were selected for the main entrance and external doors.  The doors and windows were hung directly into the Comar 9P.i Framing system which was also used to install a large glazed area to the schools front facade.

Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems; with their approved fabricator Veranti Systems completed a new build 2 form entry Catholic Primary School in Poplar, East London. Formed out of a merger of two schools the bright and eye catching design uses brick to match the surrounding area and is wrapped with shards of colour in the form of Brise Soleil. The overhanging roof ensures extra shading; with the roof line being reminiscent of Poplar’s ship building past and the skyline of London’s Canary Wharf featuring as the backdrop.  Achieving a BREEAM rating of excellent the school has been shortlisted for a 2015 ‘Construction Award’.

Comar 5P.i. Top/ Side Hung and Fixed Light  thermally efficient polyamide insulated windows were specified. These aluminium windows offer outstanding weather performance and reduce heat loss through the trademark P.i thermal break ensuring low U-values so energy bills are minimised.

Comar 6 curtain walling is a versatile thermally efficient system designed to integrate panels and glass of different widths into the façade with special profiles to include opening vents and doors.  The design of Comar 6 makes it ideal for complex facetted curtain walls as well as sheer glazed facades. Comar 6 was selected due to its slim 50mm profiles which maximised the glazed area for natural day lighting.

In a busy education environment, Comar 7 sets are a natural choice.  Not only are they available in swing, pivot, sliding, auto-sliding and sliding folding, they have been designed specifically for applications where high traffic solutions are required.  For safety, the Comar 7 doors were fitted with anti-finger trap stiles, Axim soft touch panic exit devices and Axim concealed transom closers which were hung directly from the Comar 6 frame and complied with the Disability & Equality Act 2010.

Comar 6EFT – Curtain Walling

Due to demand from our Architectural and Fabricator clients, Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems are pleased to launch additional new mullions and transoms for their innovative Comar 6EFT Curtain Wall system, with the highest Ix and Iy values available on the market today.  As Comar 6EFT has developed to be the specifier preferred system in the UK, demands for larger transom spans in excess of 3000mm and unsupported multi-storey mullions are a possibility.  Where there are different glazed areas in the same envelope we have also extruded high span mullions and transoms in the most popular box sizes, which mean that the same box size can be used throughout the project to ensure that all fixing and plaster lines throughout the facade are continuous.

Today’s design complexity, requirements for aesthetics and complex building shapes are key considerations. Aluminium offers the unique advantage of easily being extruded and manufactured into almost any custom shape with ease.  With the current focus on energy efficiency, designs must also take into account ‘thermal’ criteria and thermal breaks are incorporated.  These breaks provide a significant decrease in the thermal conductivity of the curtain walling.  The science of curtain walls now means that aspects such as thermal expansion and contraction, building movement, water diversion and thermal efficiency for cost effective heating, cooling and the lighting of a building are    in-built to the system and its design.

comar curtain walling

To provide a flexible approach to aluminium facade engineering Comar’s 6EFT Curtain Walling System utilises European wide design and extrusion expertise with Comar’s market leading supply, support and delivery.  With its exceptional design flexibility, Comar 6EFT provides high performance solutions for both new build and refurbishment façades. It is a flexible standardised system that provides bespoke solutions. Comar’s 6EFT delivers capped curtain walling with 50mm standardised sightlines and includes options for:

  • 4sided structural glazing which achieves a cutting edge façade with no visible aluminium sight lines.
  • 2sided structural glazing with horizontal or vertical capping, concealed vents where a feature and bespoke finish can be achieved through a variety of cover caps.
  • Concealed vents all systems can include side or top hung opening vents
  • Facetted glazing options for all systems are available in 7.5 o increments both convex and concave.

The system is pressure equalised, mullion drained ensuring water drains freely to the outside.

Comar 6EFT has undergone rigorous tests for the latest BS and EN standards at Taywood Engineering Ltd., with exceptional results: Air Permeability – Class AE 750, Water Tightness – Class RE 750 and Wind Resistance – 2400 Pa, Safety 3600 pa.
