Comar 6EFT – Curtain Walling

Due to demand from our Architectural and Fabricator clients, Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems are pleased to launch additional new mullions and transoms for their innovative Comar 6EFT Curtain Wall system, with the highest Ix and Iy values available on the market today.  As Comar 6EFT has developed to be the specifier preferred system in the UK, demands for larger transom spans in excess of 3000mm and unsupported multi-storey mullions are a possibility.  Where there are different glazed areas in the same envelope we have also extruded high span mullions and transoms in the most popular box sizes, which mean that the same box size can be used throughout the project to ensure that all fixing and plaster lines throughout the facade are continuous.

Today’s design complexity, requirements for aesthetics and complex building shapes are key considerations. Aluminium offers the unique advantage of easily being extruded and manufactured into almost any custom shape with ease.  With the current focus on energy efficiency, designs must also take into account ‘thermal’ criteria and thermal breaks are incorporated.  These breaks provide a significant decrease in the thermal conductivity of the curtain walling.  The science of curtain walls now means that aspects such as thermal expansion and contraction, building movement, water diversion and thermal efficiency for cost effective heating, cooling and the lighting of a building are    in-built to the system and its design.

comar curtain walling

To provide a flexible approach to aluminium facade engineering Comar’s 6EFT Curtain Walling System utilises European wide design and extrusion expertise with Comar’s market leading supply, support and delivery.  With its exceptional design flexibility, Comar 6EFT provides high performance solutions for both new build and refurbishment façades. It is a flexible standardised system that provides bespoke solutions. Comar’s 6EFT delivers capped curtain walling with 50mm standardised sightlines and includes options for:

  • 4sided structural glazing which achieves a cutting edge façade with no visible aluminium sight lines.
  • 2sided structural glazing with horizontal or vertical capping, concealed vents where a feature and bespoke finish can be achieved through a variety of cover caps.
  • Concealed vents all systems can include side or top hung opening vents
  • Facetted glazing options for all systems are available in 7.5 o increments both convex and concave.

The system is pressure equalised, mullion drained ensuring water drains freely to the outside.

Comar 6EFT has undergone rigorous tests for the latest BS and EN standards at Taywood Engineering Ltd., with exceptional results: Air Permeability – Class AE 750, Water Tightness – Class RE 750 and Wind Resistance – 2400 Pa, Safety 3600 pa.

Comar & Page Group Support ‘The Little Miracles’ Charity

Comar Architectural Aluminium, Page Group (Peterborough) Ltd and Vertikal were delighted to have been part of the re-building of The Spinney Centre, Peterborough on behalf of The ‘Little Miracles’ charity.

Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems, PAGE Group Peterborough and Vertikal donated £10K to cover materials, design work, project management, fabrication and labour on-site to erect the striking feature rainbow wall which forms part of a life changing transformation to the centre for disabled children in Peterborough.

The Little Miracles Project, part of the BBC’s charity ‘Children in Need’ was featured in the BBC1 special programme ‘DIY SOS: Million Pound Build for Children in Need’ which aired on Wednesday 13th November 2013.

BBC DIY SOS Spinney Centre COMAR & PAGE GROUP

The ‘Little Miracles’ charity runs a parent led support group/centre for children with additional needs, disabilities and life limiting conditions based in Peterborough. They help 800 families and have over 2,500 children registered. A staggering 83% percent of the families that use Little Miracles live below the poverty line, and as such all of the services they run are free of charge. For many of the children that use the centre, ‘Little Miracles’ is the only place they are able to communicate freely, make friends, and most importantly, be themselves.

In October 2013 they had to vacate their original site which was working out of a small semi-industrial space.  They were gifted a larger 2½ acre site by the local council which included a 1970’s concrete prefab. However, the building was not fit for purpose. It had no disabled toilets, access ramps or changing facilities. The prefab building also contained asbestos, and it was not secure, most importantly, it had none of the sensory equipment the children depend upon.

The programmes presenter Nick Knowles and his team launched an appeal for help around the local area, and on Twitter, in a bid to round up friends, family, local companies and tradesmen to offer up their services to help rebuild the centre. A BBC spokesperson said: “We are looking for kind hearted tradesman who are willing to be part of the show and donate their time and skills for Children in Need. In return we offer three square meals, lots of fun and the chance to make a difference to the lives of children and their families”.

The existing prefab was demolished and DIY SOS built an entirely new centre using a timber frame structure featuring full wheelchair access, a dedicated sensory room, space for counselling, an office, workable disabled toilets, a working kitchen and an area for the kids to eat, along with distinct spaces for both the young and the older children that attend the centre.

Important News: Improvements in Aluminium’s BRE Green Guide Ratings

BRE Green Guide

Message from The Council for Aluminium in Building

We are pleased to confirm to you, that the updated generic aluminium profiles have been completed and that these have now been converted into revised BRE Green Guide Ratings for Aluminium and uploaded onto the BRE Green Guide online website http://www.bre.co.uk/greenguide/podpage.jsp?id=2126   Our work has led to 281 Elements being updated and I have attached the pdfs of some of these changes.

For the first time ever since the inception of the Green Guide in 1991, Powder Coated Aluminium Commercial Windows have:

  • ‘A+’ Rating (for all commercial windows < 0./9kg/m).
  • ‘A’   Rating (for all commercial windows < 1.5kg/m).

For  Domestic Powder Coated Aluminium Windows we have:

  • ‘A’ Rating (for all domestic windows < 1.08 kg/m).
  • ‘B’ Rating (for all domestic windows >1.08 kg/m).

To provide more detail I have attached the following:

  • Elements Update
  • Latest Profile Green Guide Ratings
  • BRE Green Guide FAQ on ‘Measuring Mass of Aluminium Windows’
  • BRE Green Guide 2008 Commercial & Domestic individual ratings

This is a great news story for aluminium and thanks should go out to all the funding partners:

–          International Aluminium Institute (IAI)

–          CAB

–          Aluminium Federation

We are particularly indebted to the input of Chris Bayliss (IAI) and Christian Leroy, European Aluminium Association (EAA). With more changes and new standards ahead we still have a huge amount of work to do in this area in both the UK and Europe but this should give our 21st Century material a bit of an extra lift in difficult trading conditions.
