Curved Aluminium Curtain Walling Facade for Offices

Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems; with their approved fabricator Formes Alutek Ltd recently completed a new build office building which forms part of ‘The West of Duddon Sands Offshore Windfarm’, a JV project between Scottish Power Renewables and Dong Energy. The project comprises of an onshore substation, 108 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 389 megawatts and brand new bespoke Operations & Management office facilities based at West of Duddon Sands, Barrow-in-Furness.

A striking curved facade was installed and Comar 6EFT 4sided SG with concealed vents was selected as it provides a structurally glazed curtain walling solution with EPDM or Silicon seals which creates facets at 7.5° increments convex or concave. Comar EFT 4 sided offers architects the opportunity to maximise large glazed areas as it has the slimmest glazing seals available on the market.

In a busy office environment, Comar 7 door sets are a natural choice. Not only are they available in swing, pivot, sliding, auto-sliding and sliding/folding, they have been designed specifically for retail applications where high traffic solutions are required. For safety, the Comar 7 swing doors were fitted with anti-finger trap stiles and Axim concealed transom closers which were hung directly from the Comar 6EFT curtain wall again enforcing the reduced the sight lines.

The project was completed using Comar 5P.i top hung windows. The Comar 5P.i window system uses trademarked Polyamide Insulated (P.i) that provides exceptional thermal performance in a market where energy efficient designs and meeting the demands of the latest building regulations are paramount. All configurations, such as casement, top swing reversible, pivot, tilt and turn and sliding can be manufactured.

Solar shading was a key consideration on the southern elevations of this project; therefore to shade the façade vertically hung Comar Duco-sun C was specified. The blades, rafters and struts are all part of the unique Ducosun multi-fit system which allows fast track installation with its “clicks & glide” assembly.

Comar Window Walling for Visitor Centre

Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems; with their approved fabricator PAGE Group Peterborough Ltd recently completed a Visitor Centre which is part of the Virginia Water Pavilion in Windsor Great Park. This new building overlooks Virginia Water, an extensive man-made lake set in a picturesque 18th century landscape, situated in the Grade 1 listed Royal Landscape in Windsor Great Park. The concept for the new visitor centre was born out of the immediate landscape and is located at the public entrance where the building welcomes visitors to Virginia Water. Its canopied form frames the view of the lake and the echelon form of the building and its terraces overlook the lake and facilities include a kiosk selling refreshments, public toilets and staff facilities.

Architects: Stanton Williams – Fabricator: PAGE Group Peterborough Ltd –

Main Contractor: Ashe Construction Ltd – Project Value: £40,000

System Used:  Comar 3 GFT & 7 AFT – Location: Great Windsor Park, Berkshire

Comar 3 ground floor framing was selected which incorporates the Comar 7auto sliding doors which were specified for the main entrances. For safety, the Comar 7 AFT Commercial Doors were fitted with Anti-Finger Trap stiles which were hung directly from the Comar 3 ground floor framing.  Comar 7 door sets are a natural choice for any busy public environment and are available in swing, pivot, sliding, auto-sliding and sliding folding.

Structural Curtain Wall Facade for Southend Airport

Comar Architectural Aluminium  Systems; with their approved fabricator L.A.G (Lincolnshire Architectural Glazing) completed works on the first phase of London’s newest airport terminal at Southend Airport. Since opening the airport saw a 29.9% passenger increase during the summer of 2013, their busiest summer since formal records began in 1967.

The design vision was to create a continuous glazed facade to the new terminal clearly identifying its location to passengers. With this in mind, and to ensure the design brief could be achieved, Comar 6EFT 4sided SG was selected as it offers architects a flexible system, providing a structurally glazed solution, with options for facets, concealed vents and an extensive range of profiles that cater for large structurally glazed panes.  Comar 6EFT 4sided SG also offered the slimmest silicon or EPDM joints in the industry, which means the eye catching glazed area is maximised.

In an extremely busy Airport environment, Comar 7P.i Commercial Door sets were the natural choice.  Not only are they available in swing, pivot, sliding, auto-sliding and sliding folding, they have been designed specifically for applications where high traffic solutions are required.  Polyamide Insulated (P.i) door systems also provide exceptional thermal performance in a market where energy efficient designs and meeting the demands of the latest building regulations are paramount.

All Comar approved fabricators are required to have the technical expertise to attend pre-site meetings and provide detailing.  L.A.G liaised closely with the specifiers to provide design advice and detailing which ensured the project ran smoothly and met site deadlines.

Comar & Page Group Support ‘The Little Miracles’ Charity

Comar Architectural Aluminium, Page Group (Peterborough) Ltd and Vertikal were delighted to have been part of the re-building of The Spinney Centre, Peterborough on behalf of The ‘Little Miracles’ charity.

Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems, PAGE Group Peterborough and Vertikal donated £10K to cover materials, design work, project management, fabrication and labour on-site to erect the striking feature rainbow wall which forms part of a life changing transformation to the centre for disabled children in Peterborough.

The Little Miracles Project, part of the BBC’s charity ‘Children in Need’ was featured in the BBC1 special programme ‘DIY SOS: Million Pound Build for Children in Need’ which aired on Wednesday 13th November 2013.

BBC DIY SOS Spinney Centre COMAR & PAGE GROUP

The ‘Little Miracles’ charity runs a parent led support group/centre for children with additional needs, disabilities and life limiting conditions based in Peterborough. They help 800 families and have over 2,500 children registered. A staggering 83% percent of the families that use Little Miracles live below the poverty line, and as such all of the services they run are free of charge. For many of the children that use the centre, ‘Little Miracles’ is the only place they are able to communicate freely, make friends, and most importantly, be themselves.

In October 2013 they had to vacate their original site which was working out of a small semi-industrial space.  They were gifted a larger 2½ acre site by the local council which included a 1970’s concrete prefab. However, the building was not fit for purpose. It had no disabled toilets, access ramps or changing facilities. The prefab building also contained asbestos, and it was not secure, most importantly, it had none of the sensory equipment the children depend upon.

The programmes presenter Nick Knowles and his team launched an appeal for help around the local area, and on Twitter, in a bid to round up friends, family, local companies and tradesmen to offer up their services to help rebuild the centre. A BBC spokesperson said: “We are looking for kind hearted tradesman who are willing to be part of the show and donate their time and skills for Children in Need. In return we offer three square meals, lots of fun and the chance to make a difference to the lives of children and their families”.

The existing prefab was demolished and DIY SOS built an entirely new centre using a timber frame structure featuring full wheelchair access, a dedicated sensory room, space for counselling, an office, workable disabled toilets, a working kitchen and an area for the kids to eat, along with distinct spaces for both the young and the older children that attend the centre.

Comar 7 Doors Passes LPS 1175, BSEN1627

Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems are pleased to announce that our Comar 7 Commercial Door has passed LPS 1175 SR 2 and the new security standard BS EN 1627 Class 3.

They are also the first company to gain LPCB approval to EN 1627 (Pedestrian doorsets, windows, curtain walling, grilles and shutters. Burglar resistance. Requirements and classification).

Commenting on behalf of LPCB, Richard Flint (Physical Security Scheme Manager) said: ‘We are delighted that Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems Limited chose to submit their Comar 7 doorsets to LPCB for evaluation and that they successfully achieved approval to both LPS 1175 and EN 1627.’

LPCB stands for Loss Prevention Certification Board – a certification brand of BRE Global Limited. The LPCB List of Approved Fire & Security Products and Services – “The Red Book” is an essential reference for specifiers, regulators, designers and end users of fire and security products and services. The tests for the “Red Book” are based on the following criteria:

  • Satisfactory product performance during testing
  • Satisfactory product construction
  • Satisfactory manufacturing processes
  • Satisfactory product service experience

BS EN 1627 is the new European security standard that has recently been ratified by all member states.  Achieving EN 1627 to Class 3 for aluminium door sets, offers optimum security and ensures that Comar 7 door sets meet the very latest security demands.

These security standards ensure that in commercial applications, as far as is reasonable, the security features are tamper resistant on the non attack side from tools such as soft body impactors, screwdrivers, knives or glass cutters.  These tools will have been selected for testing in order to stimulate an opportunist attack.  The main purpose of this standard is to evaluate the resistance to burglary offered by physical security products. All in situ hardware, such as lock and hinges, as well as any product which comprises an opening element and a frame or retaining sides, is tested, then the element and its frame or guides is tested as a combination in locked position. The standard also makes provision to test the adequacy of the installation method.
